Sangjee Lee /CH3 Essay 1st draft/Tuesday 1.p.m

I was just a little baby when my grandmother first came to my house to help my mother take care of me. Even though it was years ago, the memory of her always takes a special place in my heart. She was quite petite. Her face was small and had a few wrinkle despite of her age. She had a few deep lines across the corner of her eyes and soft smile lines adored her face.  Her hair was always pulled back into neat bun and she wore plain binyeo, Korean traditional ornamental hairpin. I used to love watching her while she brushed her hair. She said she used to have a thick and luxuriant hair but as time passes, her hair became very thin. Despite what she said, I thought her hair looked gorgeous like silver star. She brushed and brushed and put on camellia oil before making a bun with binyo. I've never seen her wear any make up but she never forgot to do this little ritual even when she did not feel very well. The whole thing looked almost solemn.

She always the one who woke up earliest. I used to wake up by the sound of her sweeping the front yard.  The outside was still quite dark with the faint light that had a colour of soft grey. I used to run outside to see her, so I was always the second one to wake up earliest. We had two dogs in our front yard and they were already eating the food she gave them. I wanted to play with them, but my grandmother always said "Now, Now, Don't go near the dog while they're eating.  They can bite you and above all you don't want to wake up your mom and dad. They have to go to work and they need some sleep. Why don't you get some more sleep? It is still early." But I always refused to go to sleep and she knew I won't because she always gave me an apple after saying that. I sat on the chair eating apple and watched her finish sweeping the floor. Because of that, I always fell asleep again before lunch and my mother scolded me saying that I have unhealthy sleeping habit.

Every time I woke up in dawn and saw the room filled with blue greyish colour and refreshing air, I felt very calm and peaceful. My grandmother had a face of the dawn. She didn't express her emotion much but made everyone around her peaceful and warm. I never saw her get angry or upset. Also I never saw laugh out loud or get excited. She was a big mountain that didn't budge and I always found myself feel safe and protected around her.

Dohoon Hong/Chapter 3 essay 1st draft/Tuesday 1 p.m.

I have a friend named Tim. I first met him during my first year of high school. We were designated to a same class room and the first thing that caught my attention was his physical feature. He was short; probably one of the shortest people in school. He had a funny looking mushroom shaped hair style, and he did not look very masculine, because he did not have a lot of muscles. Although he was short, he stood out in the class, because he was called by the teachers often. Everyone in my class immediately considered him as the smartest guy in our class. His big dark glasses could have been one proof of such thought. Also, people who graduated from the same junior high as Tim told others that he was really smart.

It was not until April, almost a month after the start of the first semester, when Tim and I started to get friendly. Our class was preparing for a soccer game against another class, when Tim came up to me and asked what position I wanted to play. I told him that I would like to play the forward position with a surprise that Tim was also going to participate in the soccer game, too. The reason for the astonishment was that I thought Tim was a hard working student who always studies. However, he was a hard working student who also knows how to play sports well. During the soccer game, I was surprised to see him have good control of the ball with his short legs and agility. Since I loved to play soccer as well, we quickly became good buddies.

Through playing sports, I figured out that Tim has a nice personality and good sportsmanship. He would not scold anyone of their mistakes during a competition, and he would rather cheer them up so that they could do better next time. I've never seen anyone speak badly about Tim, and he was always getting along with everyone without any conflict. When he gets irritated sometimes because of someone's behavior, he would not express his anger right away, but he would rather try to solve the problem the best way to avoid any strife.

Now, Tim is serving in the military as a marine. He has grown taller over the years, and he got to have huge biceps because of hard training in the army. He is always striving to overcome his thresholds, and I feel very lucky to have such a friend to learn from.

Yeonjae Hwang/Chapter 3 essay draft/Tuesday 1pm

This is about my close friend. First to describe her appearance, she wears slightly round shaped black glasses and has a short black hair with fringe. Her height is about 165cm and her foot size is 250mm. More into detail, she has shiny long real dark colored eyes and middle sized nose. Most of all, she has beautiful and quite thick lips with clear lip line, which makes her appearance more attractive. Usually she wears seemingly comfortable clothes such as training sets or just casual hoodies. I have met her for a number of times but I haven't seen her wearing jeans at all. As far as I know, she is not that girlish however she likes to wear simple accessories like rings and earrings.

Besides her outer appearance, I found out that she has an eccentric magnetism in her personality. In short, she has double sidedness which sometimes makes me confusing and at the same time very novel. Specifically, she is active and talkative. She likes to sing along with her friends and enjoys drinking alcohols, but sometimes turns into an introvert. She seems powerful and energetic yet is weak in the inside. Also, she sometimes is very emotional, whereas at times becomes very rational. So to me there are days when she seems very thoughtful and adult-like, while frequently seems childish. She becomes both fully dependent and reliant. Overall, she is a double edged sword as I do not know which personality of her will pop out. At first, it was confusing for me to become accustomed to her but I now think that this is her core feature that makes her stand out in the crowd and the main reason I view her as appealing.

Frankly, I do not know why she is the way she is now. All I can do is guessing and I drew up a conclusion that all her outer and inner traits derives from the path she walked in the past. It shows her living: her style, preference, experience, characteristic, and personality. The reason she is important to me is not about her outlook or her vague personality. It is about human goodness that I found in her and just to add a poetic touch here, she takes up a large part of my daily life since she is the way she is now.

Hyunwoo Jun/ Task 3.2 + Chapter 3 Essay/Tuesday 1:00pm

Task 3.2
I went to a park nearby the Shinimoon Station. There were not many people there. Most of them were kids and old people. The person i decided to observe more carefully was someone who was about my age.
He was average in height with a muscular figure. He had black eyes and brownish permed hair. He was sitting at a bench next to mine looking at the kids playing basketball. He wore red checked shirts, snow jeans and black tennis shoes. Nothing seemed unusual about him. He just sat there for the entire time looking at this cellphone. He was just an average man in a park. He interacted with someone else through the phone. I heard him say " I will go to the dorms." At the end, he also interacted with one of the kids in the court calling his name several times. "Ji Hun!! Ji Hun, let's go." and that is how my observation finished.

Chapter 3 Essay
His name is David in English. He is Korean but his outward appearance could confuse anyone. He is five feet eight inches tall and loves to wear sport clothes because his hobbies are soccer, tennis, and taekwondo. When I first met him during middle school, I thought he was a foreign student because he had really dark skin. He is very friendly and interesting because he loves to be funny and make jokes. He is also very talented in sports and music, but very poor in academic studies. He would always be causing trouble in Math class and be sent to the principal office daily.
Even though most of his comments are silly, I could still remember him say that "Failure is the mother of success." He basically encouraged me to keep working hard although there will be times where I would fail. That comment fits him very well because he continues to work hard even though there are many hardships coming at his way.
Right now, he is busy practicing Tae Kwon Do in his university, working hard to become a professional. I know he is working hard because his improvement is too big. I met him just two weeks ago and he showed me crazy acrobatic movements he learned in his college. He also used to work at a restaurant every day during vacation until he got his scholarship from his college.
David's first impression was always being a clown. He was the clown in our class during middle school and he still is today. Although people say bad things about his grades, people who come to understand him better will know that he is a hardworking friend. Most people react positively towards David because of his funny attitude. You could say that he can be friendly with anyone. I am proud to say that he is my best friend.

Yeonjae Hwang/Task 3.2/Tuesday 1pm

To observe uncertain majorities, I went to 'café bene' which is located nearby my house. As I had a great purpose to silently observe them without letting them know, I sat at a position that was facing another table. The seat was unoccupied, yet soon after a man and a woman came to sit there. They first placed put down their bags and belongings on the chair, then the man went to the counter to order coffees. Meanwhile, I tried to carefully observe the women but I instantly failed as I she looked at me and we made an eye contact. I did not give up because I had to do my assignment. After when men came back with two coffees, one hot Americano and another cold Americano, I realized that the couple's preferences were different. First to describe the men, he was tall with an average body size of regular men. He wore a striped knit with jeans, and his facial expression seemed very serious. In fact, he was working on his laptop and was doing something that was expected to be an important task. So he kept silent and solely focused on his work. While the man was working personally, the woman pulled out a book inside her bag and started to read it for about five minutes. Then I guess she had something to look up for, so she pulled out her ipad. She wore a white cardigan with black pants. Also, she had her hair up in a ponytail. She also looked serious and I could tell that she was really into her work. The couple was each doing their work, so there was merely a conversation between them. I think the reason they came here was to do their assignment. Making no interactions with each other was not unusual as there are lots of people doing the same, however the one thing I found unusual in particular was that they were not drinking their coffees. I watched them for 15 minutes straight and until then they still did not even touch their coffees. Later, I wanted to hear them talking with each other but I could continuously see their mouth closed. At that time I was listening to the music through my earphone and I unplugged it quickly to listen to their conversation because I finally saw them moving their lips. I heard what they were saying, and it went like this. "Do you want to change seat? There is an empty table behind us. The woman sitting there went out" said the woman. And the man replied, "Sure that seat looks more comfortable". Eventually, they left where they were originally sitting and at the same time they disappear out of my sight.

My friend HK

After I got into the university, I joined the club to make some friends. Because, for me, I really hated the alcohol that time, it was kind of hard to get along with the guys in the same department. Anyway, I found a club that looks interesting and I went there. And when knocked and opened the front door of the club room, there was a chubby, short haired, and he had a face of somewhat middle age guys, man was in the room. At first I thought he might be a leader or a senior of the club. But actually, he was also freshman like me. I was really shocked by the fact.

Although he was fat and looked like an old guy, in fact, he was fat with his witty and mischievous. He had a good sense of humor. Whenever he was with us, he made us laugh out loud with his sarcastic humor. Although, sometimes he went out the line and made some people uncomfortable, because of that black comedy. But as soon as he felt some awkward air made by him, he acknowledged his fault and gave him or her sincere apologies. So everybody in the club actually liked him and he was indispensable.

He was also walking dictionary. And it was quite surprising. When I mumbled to myself like "ah what was the name of guitarist in Red Hot Chili Peppers?" or "which country colonized the India…", he noticed my curiosity and answered with correct answer. And when we went out somewhere to play together, he at least knew 3 or 4 fun or interesting fact about the location and made us awe in his knowledge. Once I asked him "why are you so knowledgeable?" then he replied "oh, actually one of my hobbies is looking up the Wiki dictionary. It's pretty fun." . He was really smart guy.

But there were some flaws too. Especially he lacked self esteem. As a matter of fact, he had to spend 1 more year to get in to HUFS, because he failed his first SAT.  So he used to goes like "oh... I'm already lagging 1Y behind you guys, it's already late for me to start a new things." And other problem was he was really full of negativity "No, I won't make it…" , "trial and error makes people pathetic not improvement." , "Nobody likes me." . He always tagged along with those bad thoughts. And personally, I really didn't understand why he had to be so negative. He was very funny and wise guy into my eyes.

For now, he's serving his duty in the army. So I would be able to see him about 2Y from now. Had not been for him, my school life would have been boring. And everybody in the club also thinks like that. So I hope he take care well in the army and greet us with his bad sense of humor again.

dan kim. 3.2 practice assignment

He looked like some fashion model. He's hair was gray, very handsome, and fashion was also really good. I guess he was doing fitting model because, besides him, there was guy taking a picture. Something unusual was that, while other people in the park just walk around, they made some pose and the photographer was shooting that. He was just talking about he's family issue, but I don't know why. I think he was just doing a pep talk with the photo guy. In addition there was also a woman who was making some pose with him. Maybe they both were a model. They acted like they were couple while shooting a photo.
