Chapter 3_ Final Draft

The only one person

It was on November 24, 2012 when I saw her first and it looked as if the world would have changed completely. I mean I fell in love for with her and I felt as if i could do whatever for her, however difficult it was.

I thought she was beautiful but others said to me that I should wear glasses. Actually, her appearance isn't perfect because her eyes are not big enough, her nose is disappointedly low and she doesn't have golden ratio of the body. But to me, she was so lovely that I could smile whenever we were together. I thought the moment would be forever and we could live happily ever after.

As time went by, she started to take the initiative and exercise power of our relationship. I couldn't do anything without her permission. For example, when I wanted to have Italian food and asked her to have it together, she refused to and ordered other things that I didn't want. Sometimes I considered her as a dictator in our relationship because she had to do whatever she wanted. I wanted to improve the situation because I was not sure if this kind of relationship wouldn't last long. I didn't want to lose her.

I started to let her know what couldn't be accepted to me and what made me happy. At first, she hated my behaviors and refused to accept everything. I persuaded her and finally she tried to change her linguistic habits. She used to say "Bring water" but now she says "Can you bring me water, please?" It is not a big deal but it is the beginning of changing. I don't expect that she changes everything I want her to but I know she will try to because we love each other.

When I didn't know her, I thought I knew who I was. But I was wrong. I didn't know myself completely until I knew her. It was she who let me know myself, the world and everything around me. Previously, I didn't know that I was an emotional person and I didn't know that I could laugh such loudly. She taught me everything. It seems that the new world opened as soon as I first met her. She was the only one who changed me.

Her name is Lim Hayun. She is my daughter and 34 months old. She is an only child. She likes to play with a ball and sing a song. She loves her mother's reading a book and always her busy mother. She is the one who makes her parents the real adults.

I can still remember the first time I saw him, clear and like it was just yesterday.

I met him on a warm Saturday afternoon a year ago; it was my first job working as a teaching assistant in a language school, I felt a sea of anxiety deep down, as soon as I stepped into the office, I can feel my palms beginning to sweat, and I can't help but started to bitten my nails, and that is when I first saw him.

He stood up, and walked towards me, tall, short dark hair with some blonde patches, tan skin, dark green eyes with a yellow ring around them which always reminds me of the earth from space. His habit of dress, however, was rather casual, but he looked good in that dark navy blue school T-shirt and a pair of mustard jeans, smiling. Then he reached out to me and said: 'Welcome to our school, its so great to meet you, don't be nervous I am new here too, this is my second week and I'm sure you are gonna do great here.' with a deep British accent.

I forgot about how nervous I was. And he became one of the most important reasons why I loved to work there. He would always help me out when I don't know how to deal with younger kids or their parents, he had taught me a lot with in just 3 months.

Working with him was such a great experience and he was the best working partner anyone could ever ask for. He was surprisingly good with kids at the age of 25. He never get tired helping the kids with their pronunciation no matter how many times he have to repeat them, and he influenced the kids to read more books and to actually devote themselves into learning English. He was talented and very friendly to the kids too. He never turned down anyone whenever someone asked for his help and advice.

He taught not only English but guitar as well, which was his major back in university and I can still remember during the break time, he liked to play guitar to his students and made them sing the ABC song to it and sit in a big circle around him.

Up to today, he is still always there willing to help. Similarly, his other ways did not resemble those of a teacher. I am the kind of people who are always on edges and always worry about too much, but on the contrary, he is a quite laid back and easygoing kind of person. He can always make my big problems seem so small like they were nothing, I feel really comfortable and relaxed whenever I am around him.

He is always so positive and he knows when to be serious and when to be funny which is what I love about him the most.

Bo-won Kim/ Chap3 final draft/ Tuesday 1pm

Rose With Prickles

"What are you looking at, teacher?"

"The rose. Outside there. Aren't they beautiful?"

She told me as she opened her red lips carefully. The words from her lips were so fragile that they seemed to be torn apart when they fall to the ground. The room was quite with nothing but the sound of fallen leaves swinging on the ground. Leaves, with no other resistance, let the wind carry them to somewhere that no one knows. There also was sound of footsteps as kids stepped out the front door leaving bunch of giggles behind. The class had finished and almost everyone went home. I was waiting for my friend after she hurried into the restroom, yelling at me to wait for her. I waited for her, closing my bag and getting ready to go home.

"Bo-won? You didn't go yet?"

I looked up and there was she. Everyone liked her. She had a black bob hair that reached around her shoulders. Her white teeth made her red lips even brighter. Every girl in my kindergarten loved her big sparkling eyes with her long black eyelashes which made her eyes even bigger. I especially envied her fair skin. She was the most beautiful adult women I had seen at that time. People loved her not just for her beauty but the way she expresses words and there was unique mood she always had with her. My friends and I always used to say,

"When I get older, I'm going to be like my teacher!"

"No, I am going to be pretty like her!"

Looking around girls who talked about their favorite teacher, she just gave us a warm smile. Sometimes, she was lost in her thought. No, actually it was all the time that she was absorbed in her thought. No one knows what she had in her mind. No one dared to disturb her moment. This moment was when she had crossed to her own world and left everything else behind.

Once, I couldn't sleep during the nap time so I tossed and turned for the first five minutes. Then I glanced at the door and the teacher was looking outside the window.

"Teacher, teacher. What are you doing?"

I asked her crawling to get closer to her. I was just a seven-year-old girl, curious about everything that's happening around her. She answered the same thing as always.

"The red rose. Go to sleep, princess."

"I want to have a look at it, too! I can't sleep, teacher."

"All right, then. Have a look at it. Come here."

Just like that, it was my first time seeing the red rose that my teacher had always been looking at. I hopped onto her legs and stared out the window, copying her every move. There was one red rose, bragging about its glamorous pose. It was very flashy but somehow there were prickles on its body.

"The rose looks so hurt. I feel sad about it. I don't understand why those prickles are hurting her."

"Those prickles are what make her beautiful, princess."

"What? No, teacher. Prickles are bad."

I said as I made an evil face at prickles as though they can see my face and let go of beautiful rose. The teacher just smiled at me and stared back at the rose.

"Teacher, do you want that rose? Do you want me to get it for you? I can go down and just.."

"No, princess. No. they are beautiful when you are looking at them."

Again, I couldn't understand what she meant. We are supposed to have beautiful things, not just staring at them. That's what was going around in a seven-year-old girl's mind. I was confused.

When I looked outside the window again, the wind was blowing. Wind was blowing a little hard that the rose looked as if it was going to be pulled up. But when the wind was defeated by the sunshine, the rose got up and stood in its place as if nothing had happened. I looked at the rose getting up and off the ground for several times and fell asleep. When I woke up, I was with other kids under the warm blanket.

I don't understand the meaning of her words one hundred percent. But now I'm almost her age, I can get the feeling of it. Prickles are what makes rose more beautiful since rose herself will not stand out. She looks much stronger with all those prickles on her body. I can't forget the day I heard what rose meant. Rose was just a red, pretty flower with no smell to me but now I can see how beautiful it is. Rose with prickles is beautiful.

Dohoon Hong/Chapter 3 Final Draft/Tuesday 1pm

The All-Rounder

I first met him during my first year of high school. His name is Tim. We were designated to a same class room and the first thing that caught my attention was his physical feature. He was short; probably one of the shortest people in school. He had a funny looking mushroom shaped hair, and he did not look very masculine, because he did not have a lot of muscles. Although he was short, he stood out in the class, because he was called by the teachers often. Everyone in my class immediately considered him as the smartest guy in our class. His big dark glasses could have been one proof of such thought. Also, people who graduated from the same junior high as Tim, told others that he was really smart. Eventually, he was called up front during an assembly at the gym to receive scholarship. Even though he was smart, he did not ignore others, and he rather showed a humble behavior saying, "No, I'm not that smart guys. I just do my best."

It was not until April, almost a month after the start of the first semester, when Tim and I started to get friendly. Our class was preparing for a soccer game against another class, when Tim came up to me and asked what position I wanted to play. I told him that I would like to play the forward position. At that moment I was surprised to see that Tim was also going to participate in the soccer game. The reason for the astonishment was that I thought Tim was a hard working student who always studies. However, he was a hard working student who also knows how to play sports well. During the soccer game, I was surprised to see him have agility and good control of the ball with his short legs. Since I loved to play soccer as well, we quickly became good buddies. I figured out Tim was not only stuck to his seat studying, but also knows how to hang around with friends.

Through playing sports, I found out that Tim has a nice personality and good sportsmanship. He would not scold anyone of their mistakes during a competition, and he would rather cheer them up so that they could do better next time. I've never seen anyone speak badly about Tim, and he was always getting along with everyone without any conflict. When he gets irritated sometimes because of someone's behavior, he would not express his anger right away, but he would rather try to solve the problem the best way to avoid any strife. This kind of behavior was also surprising because he is the youngest in his family, his oldest brother in the age of 30. Usually, the stereotypical thought of the youngest person in the family would be someone who always relies on and depends on their older siblings. Moreover, they tend to be more immature than their age group. Although not the kind of guy who would run for the president of the class, Tim has leadership among his friends or in small groups.

Now, Tim is serving in the military as a marine. Over the years, he has grown taller up to about 170cm, and he got to have huge biceps because of hard training in the military. He is starting to look more like a grown-up man which is a very different image from high school. He is always striving to overcome his thresholds, and I feel very lucky to have such a friend to learn from.

Hyun woo Jun/Chapter 3 Essay Final Draft/Tuesday 1:00pm

                                                                                                                                                       Hyun woo Jun

                                                                                                                                                           201402934

                                                                        The Dark Skinned Clown

His name is David in English. He is Korean but his outward appearance could confuse anyone including me. When I first met him during middle school, I thought he was a foreign student because he had really dark skin. He is five feet eight inches tall and loves to wear sport clothes because he loves playing soccer, tennis, and taekwondo. He is also very talented in music. He is a great singer and an excellent drummer. His sisters are majoring choreography so it is not a surprise for him to be great at music. However, he is very poor at academic studies. He would always be causing trouble during class and therefore be sent to the principal office. Yet, he is very friendly and interesting because he loves to be funny and make jokes.

Even though he is careless most of the time, he can sometimes be serious. I could still remember him say that "Failure is the mother of success" when I failed to get a high TOEFL grade. He encouraged me to keep working hard although there will be times where I would fail. That comment fits him very well because he continues to work hard even though there are many hardships coming at his way. He has always been a special member of our school, our church, and even our family. He knows how to deal with anyone even the little kids because of his mature and childish attitude.

Right now, he is busy practicing Tae Kwon Do in his university, working hard to become a professional. I know he is working hard because his improvement is too big. I met him just two weeks ago and he showed me crazy acrobatic movements he learned in his college. He also used to work at a restaurant every day during vacation until he got his scholarship from his college. I believe that out of my friends in my school and church, David has been the one who had matured the most during our time spent together since 2008.

David's first impression was always being a clown. He was the clown in our class during middle school and he still is today. Although people say bad things about his grades, people who come to understand him better will know that he is a hardworking friend. Most people react positively towards David because of his funny attitude. You could say that he can be friendly with anyone. I am proud to say that he is my best friend.

Yeonjae Hwang/Chapter 3 essay final/ Tuesday 1pm

The one and only person, who takes a large part of my life.

"I never thought I would be attracted to someone. It's so out of sudden" is my first saying whenever I talk about that person with my friends. Carefully indulging in reminiscence, I remember the moment I met the person and the whole procedure of how we became closer. However, the moment I become fond of the person is left blank within my memories. It certainly is strange and might sound ironic, but I guess my good feelings towards one silently approached out of mist. We met often and talked a lot. As time went by, we became closer than ever which I think it was then when my favorable emotions sparked up.

People are all in relationship because obviously human beings are social animals. We cannot pleasantly live our lives without any human interaction and communication. We achieve something through others, experience failures against others, and from all these we write our own life journal and find our true identity. Of course, it applies to me in the same way as well. I believe my days have completely changed after my acquaintance with her. Yes, the person I am talking about from the start is a girl, a good friend of mine. First to describe her appearance, she wears slightly round shaped black glasses and has a short black hair with fringe. People usually say wearing round shaped glasses is hard to suit everyone, but luckily she is the one who looks nice with those. Also, unlike me with very dry hair, she somehow manages to maintain her hair silky at all times. Whenever she nods her head, her well conditioned hair tags along as if a bird flapping its wings. She has shiny long real dark colored eyes and middle sized nose. Most of all, she has beautiful and quite thick lips with a clear lip line, which makes her appearance more attractive. Usually she wears seemingly comfortable clothes such as training sets or just casual hoodies. Also she likes to wear slightly heeled sneakers. I have met her continuously but I neither have seen her wearing jeans at all nor her wearing high heels. More into detail, her height is about 165cm and her foot size is 250mm. Most of her physical traits are taller or bigger than me so when we walk along together, she looks taller than usual days due to her heeled shoes. In addition, she always looks down at me with a vague smile as if she were saying 'you are so short'. Likewise, her outer appearance is not that girlish, however unlike what I have expected she likes to wear simple accessories like rings and earrings at times.

Besides how she looks, I found out that she has an eccentric magnetism in her personality. In short, she has double sidedness which first made me confusing and at the same time very novel. Specifically, she is active and talkative. She likes to sing loudly along with her friends and enjoys drinking alcohol, but sometimes turns into an introvert. She becomes wild and free while still maintaining her own convictions. For example, when she gets mad there are days when she seems uncontrollable yet has an amazing ability to handle herself just to the extent of bursting out completely. So she seems to be full of power and energy yet sometimes reveals her weak inner side. Also, she sometimes is very emotional, whereas at times becomes very rational. Thus, I view both of her facets: one thoughtful adult-like and another childish. When she turns to the former side, she becomes fully dependent and takes a good care of me as a mother looking after her beloved daughter. However, shifting on the latter side, she becomes very reliant and it is then when it becomes my responsibility and duty to take care of her. Overall, she is a double edged sword as I do not know which personality of her will pop out. At first, it was surely confusing for me to get accustomed to her but I now think that this is her primary feature that makes her stand out in the crowd and the main reason I am helplessly drawn to her magnetism.

My friend's aura is something that I have never seen or felt from anyone during my entire life. Without thorough observation and much attention, it is unlikely to guess what kind of person she is. From the beginning, I found out that the combination of all her outer and inner traits derives from the path she walked in the past, it shows her living: her style, preference, experience, characteristic, and personality. The reason she is important to me is not about her outlook or her vague personality. It is about her human goodness and all the positive influences she gives me. Lastly, just to add a poetic touch here, she takes up a large part of my daily life as she is the way she is now and because she is the person who helped me match the pieces of my life puzzle.

Yoona Kim / Chapter 3 Essay Final Draft / Tuesday 1pm

My dearest aunt, Soon

She speaks Seoulite like Gyeongsang dialect. When I was born, she took care of me when my mum had to recover from giving birth. After 25 years of time, she still greets me with the warmest smile saying "Oh my dear (baby) girl, Yoona." Now, I am about to graduate the university and prepare for the new chapter in my life. She always encourages me in any circumstances by saying "Everything's gonna be alright."

She is slender, literally slender. She is thin like a twig. However, she is a pine tree that survived more than 60 years and endured many hardships of life. Unlike her body figure, she always stands still and stays strong. She has some descent wrinkles on her face which show her pain in life and her strength at the same time.

My mum used to tell me how come aunt Soon took care of me when I was born. Since my mum was the youngest sibling of all, every other aunt could help my mum. Then why is the aunt Soon special? That is because she is the only one who has an experience of becoming an older sister, an aunt, a mum, and finally a grandmother.

For me, the most vivid memory of her flies back to my middle school days. For a year, I had a chance to live nearby her family. During that time, I was having a hard time with a sudden change of my environment including a new school, new friends, and a new town. At that time, my aunt ran a small snack bar near my new school. After few days, many friends found out that snack bar was my aunt's and started to visit there with me. Every one of them enjoyed tteok-bokki that my aunt made. Thanks to my aunt's snack bar, I was able to easily get along with friends from the new school. At that time, my aunt was my heroine.

Whenever she comes to Seoul and visits my home, the place to find her is the 'kitchen'. We always tell her not to be in there and take some rest. She always replies, "I feel comfortable here. I've been working in the kitchens for entire my life. So never mind!" However, we all know the reason why she stays in the kitchen. That is because she is so warmhearted and affectionate to the family that she wants to make us the world's best food.

Recently, there was a big change to her and our family. My aunt's grandson, Sean, was born. Sean is my cousin and is a significant figure that he is the first child to be born among our siblings. It also means that my aunt Soon is the first person to become a grandmother among her siblings. It surely was a big change that led us to think about the importance of her. For once again we were able to find out how sincere she is to our family. It is not because it was her daughter's pregnancy but because that was what she always has done for our family.

Her love and support is still going on. Whenever she comes over, I can see my mum being in her most natural state which means she is in a comfortable mood with the aunt Soon. I appreciate to have someone like aunt Soon in my life. She is supportive and inspiring that her words pops up in my mind "Yoona, everything's gonna be alright. I believe in you. Keep doing what you believe is right."

I think once again, 'I am lucky to have such a person in my life.'
