Lee Chaehyun/Chapter 4 first draft/TUE 1PM

Back to my High School

I used to attend a high school near our house. I would wake up at seven every day and at 7:40 I was all ready to go. On my way to school, I would walk slowly and enjoy the scenes of those streets. The streets were green with leaves in summer, red with maple trees in the fall, and they were all white with snow in the winter.

The school was a five-story, rectangular shaped ivory building. Our classroom was in the fifth floor. Every break time, my friends and I would go running down to first floor to buy some snacks to eat. We were more energetic back then, so we got very hungry after the first class session has ended. At the back of the building, there was a small store that sold cheap hamburgers, pastries, and juice. The store, which was made of a grey container, didn't have any ventilation fans, so it always had an unpleasant smell of sweat and reheated hamburgers. Although those foods were not in good quality, a flock of students would go running in to eat those snacks, because the foods were so cheap. I was one of them, too. We would run all the way down to first floor, grab our snacks and juice, and jump up the stairs back to fifth floor, coming in the classroom out of breath.

Our classroom was about thirty meters long, twenty five meters wide, and about three or four meter in height. At break time it usually was very noisy with giggling and shouting, but after a boring class we would all feel sleepy and doze off, which made the classroom extremely quiet all of a sudden. At the back of the classroom, there were about forty lockers lined in a row. On top of the lockers a few students would lie down and sleep, using the textbook as a pillow. Someone would snore or make some funny snorting sounds while sleeping, and the rest of the students who were awake would burst into laughter.

The cafeteria building, which was located outside the main building, was one of the crowded places in our school. At lunch or dinnertime all student would dash down to the cafeteria and fight over who gets to eat first. The cafeteria basically was a big, open hall with hundreds of chairs and tables in it. The cafeteria always had a delicious scent; a strong smell of kimchi soup or curry, followed by a subtle one of steamed rice. I would guess what was for lunch or dinner, is by distinguishing those scents that were mixed altogether, waiting eagerly.

These are just a small part of our high school. However, to me, many parts of our high school were very meaningful, and our high school is the place that I reminisce, and cherish till now.

  1. I liked how you described your high-school. It was obvious that the reason you chose to write about your school was because you spent a great deal of special time there. I could feel how you cherish your memory back then with all those details given. Details included the scenes of those places at school and the scent of places with the sound made by some of students. However, it would be much greater if you added the specific details of how your high school became special to you. - Bo-won Kim
